Event Profile

International Canoe World Championships

After much lobbying and hard work by the Australian Class, the 2008 International Canoe World Championships have been brought to Melbourne and will be held as part of the renowned Sail Melbourne International Regatta. This is the first time since 1996 that this event has been conducted in the Southern Hemisphere.

The International Canoe is a boat, which represents a long and complex evolution from paddle canoe to high performance racing dinghy. As it exists today, the IC is a one-man craft, of 5.18m in length, 1.01m wide, 63kg stripped hull weight and powered by 10 square meters of sail.

The 2008 World Championships are likely to attract approximately 60 competitors from up to 8 different countries to contest the event that will boast an array of talented sailors.
