Record Fleet Expected
Preparations for the 24th Australian Impulse Championships are coming along brilliantly. At the close of the Early Bird Entries, 36 entries have been received. The encouragingly high numbers indicate that this regatta will be the largest Australian Impulse Championships yet contested.
This follows the continued resurgence of the class in Victoria, and its expansion into South Australia and Queensland. The recent building surge has seen many new boats hitting the water, improving the performance of many class veterans and also introducing many new sailors to the class. This has produced excellent racing throughout the fleet and will ensure the defending champion, Toby Whittle, from South Lake Macquarie Sailing Club, New South Wales, has his hands full retaining the trophy. With the fleet containing four previous Australian Impulse Championship winners, and numerous other champion sailors, the racing will be tight and hard. Queensland is sending a large contingent this year in the search for their first Australian Impulse Champion.
The Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club has an enviable record as a host of large regattas. It is additionally in a magnificent part of the state with fabulous water to sail on, surrounded by great scenery and numerous attractions for the non-sailor.
