A big Summer of Laser Sailing in Melbourne will include both the Australian and Asia Pacific Laser championships within a fortnight of each other.
 
Both events have applied for ISAF Grade 1 status, with the potential to offer valuable ranking points to sailors still seeking selection for their respective countries’ Olympic sailing teams.
 
The Laser nationals will also be used to decide which Australian sailors take six places at the 2008 Laser Senior Worlds in Terrigal, NSW and the four places at the 2008 Women’s Laser Radial Worlds in Auckland, NZ in March.
 
Add to this the expected huge local contingent, warming up for the Laser World Masters Championships in February and records are set to be broken. 
 
The Australian Laser Championships will be hosted by Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron between December 27 and January 4 where up to 300 sailors will create a spectacular sight.
 
The 2008 Laser Asia Pacific Championships will be held between January 14 – 19 as part of Sail Melbourne’s combined classes Asia Pacific Championsip.
 
In both regattas the Laser fleet will be made up of the three classes, Standard, Radial and 4.7, with sailors expected to vary in age from 12 to 80 years. The Laser Standard is the men’s singlehanded Olympic class boat and the Laser Radial will be sailed for the first time at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the women’s singlehanded class boat; with the Laser 4.7 providing younger or smaller sailors the opportunity to compete in a class sailed in 122 countries.
 
In the Laser Standard fleet, the top ranks will include current World champion Tom Slingsby (AUS), the 2006 World champion Michael Blackburn (AUS), Paul Goodison (GBR),Michael Leigh (CAN), Andrew Murdoch (NZL) and the Sail Melbourne 2007 winner Vasilij Zbogar (SLO).
 
 
In the Laser Radial fleet, top local sailors Sarah Blanck and Krystal Weir will face the top three placegetters at the 2007 Worlds, Anna Tunnicliffe (USA), Tania Elias Calles (MEX) and Petra Niemann (GER). Evi Van Acker (BEL) and Jo Aleh (NZL) are also expected to perform well.
